Samuel Langhorne Clemens — the man the world knows as Mark Twain — spent more than twenty summers in Elmira, New York. He called it his "home place." He wrote his greatest works here. He fell in love here. He is buried here.

Every story told on tour is rooted in primary sources: Twain's own letters, and published works, as well as the rich archive of Chemung County history.
Our guide has been performing and researching the Twain-Elmira connection for years, working closely with the expertise of local historians, archivists, and the Twain family legacy preserved at Woodlawn Cemetery.
The Elmira Connection
Why Elmira Matters
Elmira is where Twain wrote Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and much of his most celebrated work. He wrote in a small octagonal study perched on a hilltop at Quarry Farm — a study now preserved at Elmira College.
His wife Olivia Langdon was from Elmira. Her family's influence shaped Twain's career and his conscience. The Langdon family home, the Park Church where he married Olivia, and the Woodlawn Cemetery where the entire family rests — all are part of the Elmira story.
Elmira is also home to one of the most significant Civil War sites in the Northeast: the Elmira Prison Camp, where nearly 3,000 Confederate prisoners died. Twain's Elmira is inseparable from this history — and our tours don't shy away from it.
